Decatur is a growing community, its population number having recently topped 10,000.
Just barely – barely! – growing, however, is its budget for next year.
It was unveiled by Clerk-Treasurer Eran Hackman at Tuesday night’s city council meeting that the 2027 budget will see an increase of less than 1% – .76% to be exact!

The budget number which will be proposed to the state’s Department of Local Government Finance (DLGC) is $14,690,530. The city’s current budget is $14,579,622.
The new budget proposal includes a 3% pay raise for city employees. Health insurance will rise 5.8%.
“A big thank-you to all, to our department heads,” Mayor Dan Rickord said of the small budget increase.

“The department heads have been awesome to work with,” added Hackman, who spent considerable time crafting their individual budgets with them.
“This is their budget; it takes all of us to do this,” she added.
“We’re living within our means – congratulations,” said Councilman Matt Dyer.
