A three-run rally by the Adams Central Jets gave them a 4-1 lead after four innings in Wednesday’s baseball sectional against Bishop Luers, but the Knights came back with three-run tallies in both the sixth and the seventh innings to steal a victory and advance to Saturday’s semifinals with a 7-4 win.
The Jets got great work from Dakota Perry, who started the game and went four innings. Perry allowed just one unearned run and struck out five and left the game with the lead.
Adams Central picked up their first run when Dakota Perry grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1-1. They got their 4-1 lead on a single by Trevor Currie and a subsequent outfield error by Luers.
Having already been defeated by Luers earlier in the year, the Jets looked to have reversed their fortunes against the Knights, but it all unraveled when Luers hit three doubles to tie the game at four apiece in the sixth.
After Adams Central did not execute a delayed double steal correctly and made an out in a rundown in the bottom of the sixth, Luers loaded the bases with just one hit. With no outs in the inning, Luers took the lead on a wild pitch, forcing coach Foster to intentionally walk the batter to re-load the bases and Luers scored twice more on an error.
AC put two on with two out in the last inning, but it did not produce the three runs needed to extend the game, ending the Jets’ season with a 17-11 record.
