A southwest Indiana farmer says the 2026 growing season is officially underway.
Ben Kron tells Brownfield, “We’re getting close to finishing up with our post applications on all of our beans and corn. Temperature wise, it hasn’t been crazy hot. I feel almost like it’s been a little on the cool side.”
According to the latest USDA crop progress and conditions report, Indiana corn is 94 percent planted, 80 percent emerged, and rated 57 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 93 percent planted, 73 percent emerged, and rated 55 percent good to excellent. Winter wheat is 91 percent headed and rated 66 percent good to excellent.
Kron says he expects to finish replanting this week.
“Rains are kind of hit and miss,” he says. “We got a little bit here again the other day, but nothing way too over the top. They’ve been pretty welcome rains to be honest. We’ve got 100 acres or so of beans we need to replant from the river. But other than that, we’re in pretty good shape.”
Topsoil moisture is 76 percent adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is 78 percent adequate to surplus.
Kron raises corn and soybeans in Vanderburgh County.
