Decatur’s north water tower, situated in Waterworks Park, is getting some needed maintenance work which will be followed, likely next summer, by a new paint job.
City Street/Sanitation Superintendent Matt Schultz told the city’s board of works and safety at its latest meeting that Dixon Engineering has been doing various forms of maintenance and upkeep on the tower.
Dixon is an Odessa, Michigan, firm that handles engineering and inspections.
Schultz asked for and was given permission to secure a deal with Dixon to have it take bids for the painting work and hire a contractor.
“It has been a long time, at least 20 years or maybe more” since the tower – located near the city swimming pool – last received some major upkeep and a fresh coat of paint, Schultz noted.
Decatur has three water towers, the other two being located at Piqua Road and E. Monroe St., and off Line St. near Studebaker St.
NEED FIRE TRUCK? On another matter, the board approved a resolution declaring the city fire department’s 1997 aerial truck “surplus property.”
That means it can be put up for sale. First, though, according to Indiana law, it has to be offered for sale to any other fire department in the county.
If no takers there, the truck can then go on sale.
The aerial truck has approximately 10,939 miles on it, 1,848 engine hours, an extension 102 feet high, and a pump capacity of 1,500 gallons per minute.
It became available once the department’s new aerial truck was placed into service.
