The momentum carried to Gas City from the Bellmont Braves’ big walk-off win Thursday against Concordia did not lead to a Braves victory as the Mississinewa Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to win 7-5.
Piper Baker, who threw most of the game Thursday at home against Concordia, did not take the circle, with the Braves instead starting with Makenzie Mankey at pitcher. The junior threw the first two innings and allowed three runs, which all came as an answer to the two runs the Braves scored in the top of the inning. That two-run rally came with two outs with an RBI double by Emily Bleke and an RBI single by Sami Christen.Â
Mary Kate Scheumann took over pitching duties from Mankey in the top of the third and she struck out two in her first inning of work, setting the top of the Braves’ lineup up for another rally. Bleke again doubled and Christen knocked her in with a triple to tie the game at three. Scheumann worked a seamless fourth, but the fifth inning saw the Indians take the lead at 4-3.
Another Bellmont rally was spurred by Bleke’s superb hitting, this time for a triple to score Aaliyah Faurote. Once again it was Christen knocking in Bleke with one of her three hits to give Bellmont the lead for a third time in the contest.Â
Mississinewa, however, scored three times with two outs in the sixth to win the game.
Scheumann finished with four innings pitched and took the loss, striking out four and allowing four runs, three earned.
Each team committed one error.
Bellmont is set to travel to Woodlan Monday in the cold weather to take on the always competitive Warriors.
