Matt Steiner got the South Adams Starfires out to a good start Thursday at home against the New Haven Bulldogs and Owen Wanner shut down the visitors in the middle innings as the Starfires built a 9-2 lead and went on to a non-conference victory.
Coach Dave Bischoff’s team scored five in the last two innings but the lead was large enough for the Stars to hold and win. Steiner and his battery mate, Luke Bauman, each led the Starfire offensive efforts with two hits apiece.
Steiner allowed just two hits and struck out three in his three innings of work. He allowed just one earned run.
Wanner was awarded the victory for his strong appearance in relief, striking out four. He also stole two bases and drove in three runs.
