DECATUR – Just one day after falling in a heartbreaking one-stroke match against rival South Adams, the Jets were back on the greens at what might be their “second home”. They did not allow themselves to be beaten again, instead capturing the first conference title in program history by twelve strokes in an event that was shortened to just nine holes after heavy rains this past Saturday.
Lily Johnson and Piper Morgan shared medalist honors with rounds of 40 each, but the real prize was the team trophy for Johnson and her teammates, who felt confident that they would have won over 18 holes had the tournament had good enough weather Saturday.
Johnson started her round with one of the most difficult holes on the course (No. 18) and she used her home-course advantage to score a birdie to start the night. Five holes into her round, Johnson was still at par.
Morgan started in the more traditional matter, playing from No. 10, but she also carded a birdie from the get-go. Morgan closed well, going just +1 on the final four holes to catch Lily Johnson at the very end.
Johnson’s 40 was her best round of the season.
Tenley Hendricks (shown above) was paired (See gallery below) with the other No. 1s from Bluffton (Piper Morgan) and South Adams (Londyn Smith). Hendricks shot 42 and was in contention for medalist until she finished with two double bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18.
Smith nearly caught Hendricks coming into the clubhouse, making par on four of her final four holes, but finished with a solid 44 for the Starfires, who tied Bluffton with a 186 for team runner-up honors.
Adams Central senior Adrienne Johnson was in the mix, as well, but could not recover from a poor No. 11 and some putting woes.
Heritage got a 51 from Natalie Sorg, with a par on No. 11, helping the Patriots to a sixth-place finish.
