Adrienne Johnson shot a career best and a total team effort by the Adams Central Flying Jets led to a Bi-County victory at Cross Creek Saturday. Norwell had to settle for second place despite Emma Burnau capturing individual medalist honors with an 81.
Johnson had it going from the start (on No. 16), going +1 on the first five holes. She had a pair of bad holes on the front (No. 3 and 6) but she made up for them with pars on No. 4 and the very difficult par-three No. 5. Her excellence on the Par Threes continued with a birdie on No. 7, followed by two more pars for a round of 41 on the official Front Nine (lowest in the field).
Having just made her first career birdie earlier in the week, Johnson made it two on the day with a three on the par-four No. 10. A poor finish likely cost her the individual title to Burnau, but it was the team race that was more important for the Jets, who simply can’t lose this season.
Johnson’s score was a full 18 strokes better than when she played Cross Creek at the beginning of the month and it was nearly matched by teammate Gracie Patterson, who shot 14 strokes better and had her score counted in the final tally.
Tenley Hendricks got off to a slow start on the long No. 17 and No. 18, but she finished well, carding a very respectable 43 on the Back Nine at the end of the day. She played her final eight holes at +5.
Lily Johnson chose the right iron on No. 7 for the Jets, as well, and carded a birdie on her way to a round of 95.
South Adams had a great day, as well, shooting 389 and only being 15 strokes off the pace. Londyn Smith played in a No. 1 group and her threesome took the other three spots in the top four (Adrienne Johnson was the other). Smith got off to a miserable start with a double and a quadruple bogey on No. 17 and 18, but by the time she made birdie on No. 9, she had recorded a 42 on the Front Nine – the best in her threesome. Smith continued that run with a second consecutive birdie on No. 10.
Brooklyn Green and Sophia Orr (shown below) also had season-best rounds for the Stars.
For the Bellmont Braves it was not the best of days, but there was a major highlight as Mia Minnick, fresh off her career best weeknight performance, turned in an exceptional round from the No. 5 spot to finish 13th overall and as the top Brave.
Minnick started her day off with a par on No. 17 and she went +1 on the three Par Threes on the front to register a 47. Her round of 99 was 13 strokes better than her previous career best 18-hole score.
Kinley Martin had a season-best round on the Front Nine after starting on No. 1 and her 100 was her best 18-hole score of the season.
Lyla Post made a birdie on No. 6 and Morgan Huss had one on No. 7 for coach Mike Macke’s team.
