Thomas M Jones, 93 of Monroeville passed away on August 27, 2026.
He was born in Van Wert, Ohio on August 8,1933 to Glen Jones and Marie (Jones) Summersett. He was baptized in Middle Point, Ohio in 1933.
Tom began working at a young age as a farm hand in rural Ohio. He moved to Monroeville as a teen and worked his way up to produce manager at the local Kroger store. As a young adult, he began delivering chicken crates for Sunnybrooke (later Box and Pallet). From there he drove for Transamerican as a city driver and eventually a long haul driver for TMX when he became a proud member of Teamsters Local 414. In 1973, he was given the opportunity to become a Business Agent for Local 414 and finished his career in South Bend at Local 364. He served on the international car haul negotiating committee and on the Joint Council 69 state of Indiana freight, car haul and construction committee. Tom was a mentor to new teamsters business agents and was always willing to help others. He was respected and admired by the teamsters members he represented. Upon retirement, Tom started a new career selling promotional items and helping local farmers during harvest season.
Tom cared about his community and spent countless hours volunteering for his church, Monroeville United Methodist. He served as a Monroeville Volunteer Fireman and was on the Monroeville Town Board for many years. Tom was a charter member of the Monroeville Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award.
Tom married Barbara “Bobbye” Gaskill on June 22, 1952. Together they made a home and raised their two daughters in Monroeville. They created a space of welcome and hospitality. Their home was always open and they had a special way of making people feel seen and like they belonged. Upon Bobbye’s death, Tom continued as host to his family and friends by learning how to cook and bake the foods that he loved. He loved his family and friends well, keeping in touch with friends, grandchildren, and beloved nieces and nephews through phone calls and texts.
Tom’s deep love for his family and friends was most fully expressed in his retirement years which were filled with quality time at his cottage on Otter Lake, trips to Florida and Tennessee and Euchre games (he always won!).
Tom is survived by two daughters, Kathryn (Stan) Veit of Fort Wayne, Jeanne (Gary) Miller of New Haven; sister, Carolyn Gronau of Monroeville; three grandchildren, Jill (Mike) Clem, T.Jay (Nicole) Veit, and Zach (Marissa)Veit; two step-grandchildren, Nick Miller and Lindsey (Mike) Singepradith; eight great-grandchildren: Katie (Garrison Miller), Jonathan, Anna and Maria Clem; Gabe and Gracie Veit; Ben and Nora Veit; two step-great-grandchildren; Sebastian and Benjamin Singepradith; and special friend Carolyn Rhoades of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Glen Roger Jones and sister, Glenna (John) Feasby.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville with Pastor Roy Olsen III officiating. Burial will follow at Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Monroeville Lion’s Club or Monroeville Fire Department.
