A large number of Decatur homes are in line for some “sprucing up” in the next few weeks, thanks to the city’s Beautification Program.
Community Coordinator Jamie Gephart recently reported to city council that no less than 38 homes – a much-larger number than in the past – have been granted funds through the program.
Operated by the Mayor’s Youth Council, the program provides matching funds for projects to improve the exterior of residential properties within the city limits. City council administers the program and has final say on all matters.

The program, now in its third year, operates much like the city’s facade and 50/50 sidewalk programs. A resident applies for a grant, detailing a proposed project and the cost; if approved, the city then matches the amount requested.
The maximum amount awarded is $500, or $750 if submitted with an immediate neighbor.
The city’s share for this year amounts to $16,659.89, which includes $1,659.82 left over in this year’s facade program. Council gave its approval to use the leftover monies for the beautification program.
The city had budgeted $15,000 for this year’s beautification program.
“The program is really going well; the youth council worked very hard on this,” Mayor Dan Rickord said.
Renters are eligible, but the property owners must be identified on the application.
Businesses are not eligible.
One of the rules requires that projects must be visible from the public sidewalk or right of way.
Following are examples of eligible projects:
* Lawns, landscape beds or planter areas.
* Tree and/or shrub maintenance or installation.
* Flowers, shrubs, bushes or other vegetation.
* Exterior washing or painting of the primary building.
* Painting or staining of porches, decks or fence exterior paint/primer/stain.
* Repair or placement of gutters, soffit, fascia, porches, and/or decks, including railings and steps.
