April 1 was anything but a fool’s day for Adams County SAFE.
In a program featuring a talk by Sheriff Dan Mawhorr, SAFE held its annual Celebration of Youth and Children on the front area of the Adams County Courthouse in Decatur.
SAFE members and some 90 students in third through fifth grades at St. Joseph Catholic School planted their “pinwheel garden,” filling the front yard of the Adams County Courthouse with the blue pinwheels which represent the organization.
A total of 200 pinwheels were “planted,” according to SAFE.

(Note: Most of them survived Wednesday’s storm!)
The program also honored Dan and Jodi Mawhorr “for their care and support of our community and children,” SAFE said. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month.
CARNIVAL NEXT: SAFE (Supporting All Families Everyday) will hold its 10th annual carnival on Saturday, April 26, in the Garden Room at Riverside Center, 9-11 a.m..
Free games and snacks will be part of the festivities and no admission will be charged. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Ring and bag toss, bowling, golf, crafts, Plinko, corn hole, a basketball toss and a cookie walk are on the day’s agenda.
A new addition this year will be a resource fair, with community groups sharing what they do, according to SAFE.
SAFE in Adams County and Drug Free Adams County are sponsoring the event.
