Decatur’s annual spring collection of heavy trash begins Monday and will be followed the next week by a resumption of yard waste pickups.
The yard waste collections will begin Monday, April 14. and continue on a weekly basis until October.
Yard waste is collected on the same schedule as the weekly garbage/trash collection.
There are, however, some limits. “If you have to drag it to the curb, then we probably can’t take it,” city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert has said of the city effort. In other words, if the resident can’t lift a stuffed container, then city employees won’t be able to lift it either. So it likely won’t be taken away.

City officials note that residents also may take their yard waste to the city compost site located behind Riverside Center. The site is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
BIG STUFF Decatur’s first of two heavy trash collection s this year is scheduled for Monday through Friday, April 7-11.
The items will be collected on the normal schedule for the collection of trash. In the event of an unusually large number of items, city employees could run behind schedule, officials have noted.
Local residents are asked to have their heavy items at curbside by 7 a.m. on their collection day.
Items that will not be picked up are home improvement materials, construction materials carpeting, TV sets, appliances with Freon, and electronics.
