Ranked 15th in the state in 4A and 25th overall with two weeks left in the regular season, the Bellmont Braves faced a stiff challenge in their road trip to Leo Thursday night. Looking to move to 3-0 in the NE8, coach Craig Krull’s team squeaked out wins in the first two sets to put the pressure on the visitors and eventually walked away with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 victory.
Having seemingly found his best rotation in recent weeks and back to 100% full strength from mid-season injuries to key players, Krull’s team will now face a Buckeye challenge with three matches at the Crestview Invite Saturday.

The home team held an early advantage in the opening set, building a lead at 13-8 and 17-13, but the Braves rallied to bring the score even at 18 all, then won seven of the next eleven points to capture the set.

The Braves led early on in the second set with the momentum from taking the first, but Leo stormed back to lead at 18-17. The second went all the way to the wire, with the teams deadlocked at 23-23 before the Braves won the final two points.
Bellmont never trailed in the third set.
MaryKate Scheumann increased her margin as the kill leader in 4A in Indiana with 18 kills across three sets. Alyssa Gumbel added twelve.

Scheumann and Katie Mills each had 22 digs, while Gumbel had 18. Mills is second in the state in total digs.
Lilly Selking had 17 assists and Liz Bobay had 15.
Kami Jarvis led the team with three blocks, while Kaylee Kolter and Gumbel added two each.
