The Wendell Macklin Bridge on Monroe St. in Decatur can become quite dark at night, and Decatur City Council member Jenny Bowers-Shultz suggested at a recent meeting that lighting the bridge should be looked into.
“When you’re heading west, it is so dark,” Bowers-Shultz said.
It was pointed out that the Callithumpian Parade goes over the bridge while traveling west. The bridge also gets heavy nighttime use when the Fourth of July and Callithumpian fireworks shows are held, to say nothing of street traffic.
The Jackson St. bridge one block to the north has lights, but that bridge is county owned, city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert pointed out.
Gilbert said he has talked with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) in the past about lighting the bridge – which is on a federal highway – but not lately.
“So INDOT is aware of it; I can circle back and see if there is any consideration at all (of lighting the bridge),” Gilbert said.
