The Adams County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant to South Adams for a retreat for the football team at Trine University. During the retreat, the South Adams football players practiced on the Trine University game field and had the opportunity to do scrimmages and joint practices with other football teams. With the retreat, the South Adams football players spent 50 hours with their team and built team camaraderie.
Grant Moser, the head coach of the Starfires, expressed appreciation to the ACCF for this support, which reduced the cost per participant. He noted that the retreat achieved the goal of having fun playing football against other schools while building companionship as a team and developing a stronger football program.
Greg Fleming, ACCF Board member and grants committee member, added that the ACCF is pleased to support this program which promotes team sportsmanship and good health.
This ACCF grant was made possible through unrestricted funds sponsored by the James Luginbill and Smith Brothers of Berne Community Enrichment Funds.
The James E. Luginbill Community Enrichment Fund was established in 2000. Luginbill was a three-time mayor of Portland. Jim had been an advocate for community foundations since serving with the Portland Foundation. This fund carries on James’ community service.
The ACCF / Smith Brothers Furniture of Berne Company Community Enrichment Fund was established in 2002 by brothers Fred and Steve Lehman.
Smith Brothers Company (est. 1926) has grown exponentially in the number of employees, pieces / styles of furniture produced, locations of availability of their product, fleets of transportation vehicles, and geographic space occupied. This fund is their pledge to the community to serve the current needs of their residents.
