Decatur’s wastewater treatment plant came in for some high praise at city council’s recent meeting.
“It’s pretty incredible what a handful of employees are doing out there (plant on Monmouth Road) for our water,” said City Attorney Anne Razo. “They’re keeping our water safe.”

“I don’t think a lot of people know what all they’re doing out there.”
Councilwomen Jenny Bowers-Shultz and Abby Wilder also offered praise for the wastewater department headed by Superintendent Karey Fuelling.
Affolder and Bowers-Shultz, who joined council in January after being elected last November, have been familiarizing themselves with various city departments, including the fire and police departments.
The two women, along with Razo and new city Utilities Director Erin Hyerly, asked for and were given a tour of the facilities by Fuelling.
In a Facebook post, Wilder said: “As I acclimate into City Council, I am meeting with department heads to have a better understanding of how we all work together. Today I toured our Wastewater Treatment Plant. Every part of the process was so very interesting. Decatur’s process is very eco-friendly. Thank you to Karey Fuelling and her team for all that you do!”

The councilwoman also posted a photo of three beakers (accompanying photo). The one on the right holds incoming or raw wastewater, while the middle beaker shows the middle of the cleaning process. At left, then, is the final result.
