While they still have 18 official holes to play at Cross Creek at next week’s conference tournament, the Bellmont seniors still had a bittersweet night Thursday when they played their final home match against DeKalb. Playing the best team in the NE8 this season, the Braves were not in position to challenge the 170 score the Barons produced, but it was still a good night for the team.
The Barons are now 13-0 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the NE8.
“Our score of 202 is not our best,” remarked head coach Mike Macke (who very well may have also coached the final home match of his long, storied coaching career). “There were some tough pins and the course played fast as well.”
Senior Meghan Pettibone led the Braves with a round of 48, starting with a birdie on the 10th hole.
“She played solid golf except for two holes, where two bad shots snowballed into two poor numbers,” said Macke of his No. 1.
The same sentiment was true for No. 3 Abigail Blythe, also a member of this senior class. She posted two sevens on her card, but was +8 on the other seven holes. She finished with a 49.
Addi Johnson (52) and Krosbi Butler (53) completed the scoring, with both seniors contributing to the team’s 202 total.
“Addi has really come on here lately,” said Macke. Johnson was sitting at just +3 after her first four holes.
“We have two key conference matches next week. Leo will be tough to beat at their home course, but we are close enough to them that a good night can catch them,” predicted the coach. “East Noble is a team we have beaten in invitationals and one we need to beat to stay in the top tier in the NE8.”
The conference meet will be held at Cross Creek on September 9th.
