Participants in the Decatur co-ed and men’s softball leagues have been playing in less-than-ideal conditions at Kekionga Park the last three or four years.
That could change drastically with the success of the current Kekionga Project and the players in the two leagues are certainly doing their part. The city has announced that the two leagues have raised $18,531 and donated it to the project!

The city has a fundraising drive going in an attempt to raise $50,000. If that amount can be secured by August 5, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA)’s CreatINg Places program (also known as Patronicity) will match that amount – providing a total of at least $100,000 for the project.
The contribution of the players has pushed the effort to around the $30,000 mark, leaving approximately $20,000 needed to attain the goal.
Included among the project goals are lighting the current Kekionga Park field, plus refurbishing it with special flood zone netting and backstop fencing.
A pavilion and fencing are already in place at the site of a new dog park, where the Evergreen Assisted Living Facility once stood., Project dollars would redo the parking lot, add shade trees, etc., and install an automated key card operator.
The third phase will be stocking the six-acre pond by the dog park with bass and blue gill.
