Huntington North won a hard-fought varsity tennis match at home by defeating Adams Central 3-2. The Jets got wins at No. 1 singles and No. Doubles but couldn’t find the third match to snatch victory from their sectional rivals.
“It was a tight match all around,” said head coach Jessica Disinger, who noted that the two doubles matches went quickly, with the two teams splitting the points and waiting for the singles action to determine the outcome.
“At that point, No. 1 singles had lost the first set and so had No. 2 singles. Then it quickly turned around when 1 and 2 singles started winning their second sets.”
After Hillary Tobias clamped down and breezed through her deciding third set 6-0 at No. 1 singles, it all came down to McKayla Ringger in her marathon match with HN’s Hannah Szelis, a senior.
“She fought hard during a three hour long match, but fell short at 7-5. The girls were sad to have been so close at 2-3,” noted Disinger.
The Jets were swept by Huntington North in junior varsity play.
The Jets were set to take on another sectional rival in Norwell at home Monday, although the forecast may prevent the match from being played. Tuesday the Jets will travel to Carroll.
