Coach Brad Buckingham’s team could not make an out in the third inning Wednesday, scoring 18 runs in a wild frame on their way to a 22-0 win over Randolph Southern at Harry Anderson Field in Berne.
Hunter Miracle got more run support than any pitcher could dream of but he also earned the victory, allowing just one hit and striking out five in his three innings of work.
Owen Wanner and River Toledo each threw a scoreless inning of relief after the monster third inning.
Kyle Minger, Luke Bauman and Brady Beall each finished with three hits apiece, but the real story was that bottom of the third inning.
Rebel starter Vance Taylor had allowed three runs in the first two innings but had retired the last five batters he faced when leadoff hitter Kyle Minger stepped to the plate and just two pitches into the inning, Taylor induced a fly ball to center for the first out of the inning.
Then it all went awry.
The Starfires collected nine hits and Randolph Southern committed five errors before the Rebels got another out. At that point, it was 17-0 and Kyle Minger was about to bat for the third time in the inning. After Minger doubled in two more runs, Matt Steiner and Owen Wanner picked up three more RBI and Luke Bauman grounded out to short, granting the Rebels some mercy to end the inning.
The win brought the Stars back to .500 with two wins this week by a combined score of 41-0.
