An antenna leaning over the Decatur Fire Department is going to be replaced.
The radio antenna, which has continued to operate, came partially down in early March during one of Decatur’s seemingly frequent high winds. It also damaged some of the building’s gutters.
Fire Chief Jeff Sheets asked the city’s board of works and safety at its recent meeting for permission to pay the $25,000 deductible on an insurance policy and was given the okay.
Insurance will cover the $75,000 cost to replace the 50-foot antenna, along with repairs of some damaged gutter repairs.
The board also gave Sheets the go-ahead on having repairs made to a roof at the fire department building. The roof is nearing 25 years old.

The chief also informed the board that a recent storm brought damage to Safety Village, near Worthman Field.
One of the small buildings was flattened by a falling tree and another suffered damage.
Damage was estimated at $5,000.

OPENING: The board gave the chief approval to begin the hiring process a paid-on-call firefighter.
A replacement is needed as Landon Hummer recently resigned, citing the need to have more time with his family.
At full complement, the paid-on-call division has 25 firefighters.
