The Decatur Police Department has begun issuing tickets to vehicles parked on sidewalks.
Police Chief Kevin Gerber said the department has been receiving multiple complaints about such parking.
Parking on sidewalks is a violation of city ordinance for which there is a minimal fine.
In a Facebook post, the police department noted that with an increase in warm weather, people are spending more time outdoors, exercising, walking to work, just taking a walk, etc.
“Blocking the sidewalk with your vehicle causes severe issues for people with special mobility needs, children walking or riding their bicycles, and in general it’s rude and inconsiderate to those needing/using the sidewalk,” the department post said.

Violations, the department noted, include half the vehicle, the entire vehicle, or even just the tires and one edge of the car on the sidewalk.
“We would rather not issue the tickets, so feel free to stop parking on the sidewalk,” the Facebook post said.
