There are a number of alleys in Decatur which have seriously deteriorated, city officials admit.
They are, however, moving to remedy the situation.
Some of the alleys “are in pretty bad shape,” Mayor Dan Rickord said at a recent meeting of the city’s board of works and safety.
Wayne Asphalt, a Fort Wayne firm which has done work in Decatur in the past, won a contract for a little over $45,000 to pave three of the worst alleys.

The price is a good one, Street/Sanitation Superintendent Matt Schultz said, and that should allow funds to be available for more alley work.
The three contracted for repaving:
Between N. Second St. and N. Third St., approximately 113 feet in length.
Between Stevenson St.and Elm S., approximately 770 feet.
Between Penn St. and Rod St., approximately 218 feet.
MORE AVAILABLE: In 2026, the city appropriated $400,000 from its Economic Development Income Tax fund for planned Second St. improvements, from Monroe Street to Jackson.
However, since that project will be a part of the city’s Community Crossings grant bid in 2027, Schultz asked council for $100,000 of that appropriated amount to go toward updating some alleyways in the city yet this year.
Council approved the idea.
