BERNE – South Adams scored four times in the opening quarter, the defense pitched a shutout and Will Patterson scored in nearly every way possible Friday night for a perfect start to the postseason for the Starfires.
Did we mention the Stars also made a field goal?!
It was that kind of night against a Busco team that was, for all intents and purposes, a good, solid football team coming into Friday night.
The way the Stars were playing in the first half, the visitors did not stand a chance.
Within three minutes of the opening kickoff on the IHSAA postseason, Will Patterson had scored twice – once on a run and the second time on a long, 85-yard punt return up the Starfire sideline (see above).
If one had only read the story of the game so far and not attended the contest, he might guess that Patterson had 20-25 touches on offense.
He had seven.
Five carries for 66 yards and two scores. Two catches. Two touchdowns. The special teams score.
The stats show just how special Patterson is to the team.
The Stars didn’t even need to use top recruit Wes Summersett, who had members of the media signing up for credentials this week after his commitment to Purdue. Wes got just three touches and had 68 yards.
On the other side of the ball, it was a different story.
Summersett had eight solo tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss, absolutely terrorizing Blane Wilson, who was the leading rusher for the Eagles with just 43 yards. Wilson had one pass completion.
The Stars will head to Southwood for the sectional semifinal on Friday in a game that will be available via WZBD.
