Agony Hill.
That’s a phrase that will petrify a ninth grade runner on a cross country team in northern Indiana, but this year’s Bellmont freshmen showed no fear in climbing one of the most famous hills in the sport in our state.
The Bellmont boys team finished in sixth place out of 24 teams in the middle class of a three-class event, while the girls were 13th.
For most meets, WZBD will print the list of season bests and career bests. This is not the course for those types of times. Instead, it’s a lesson in perseverance and mental fortitude. It’s exactly the kind of race that serves as the peak of training for the regular season, before the tone of training changes leading up to the conference and state meets.
Emmett Glenn cracked the Top Ten with his performance of 17:21. Although it was his second-fastest time of the year, it was likely his most impressive.
Classmate Frank Heimann finished 28th, coming across the line in less time than he ran in his opening two 5Ks this season.
In the girls’ race, Bridget Juengel and Isabelle Buuck nearly matched their career bests in impressive races.
Bristol Scherry led the way for the Braves with a finish in the Top 50.
