FORT WAYNE – There were few doubts that Homestead would dominate their own golf sectional Friday, but teams from Z-Land had plenty of reasons to be excited as all three Adams County teams advanced a team or an individual, as did Norwell at a wet Chestnut Hills.
The Spartans had the top two individuals, with Kamryn Nevins (77) beating out Taylor Diamond by two strokes, but the South Adams Starfires were second, with Londyn Smith finishing third overall.
Adams Central finished in a tie with Norwell for the final team spot, but Brielle Fruechte’s fifth score was better than Norwell’s and the Jets got their ticket to the Noble Hawk regional Friday.
The Bellmont Braves will be represented by Morgan Huss at the regional with her round of 99.
Emma Burnau will keep the Norwell season alive. She had the best round of any player not on an advancing team with her 94. Teammate Kendall Fegley was two strokes away from joining her.
And for Heritage, it was a wonderful round by freshman Grace Buuck, who ended up pacing the Patriots with a 103. She nearly made it out and into regional, missing out by just four strokes. She shot a 50 on the back and had a birdie at No. 9.
Smith’s round for the Starfires was solid from the start, as she shot a 42 that included a birdie on No. 3. Smith made three pars to close out her day.
Besides No. 1 Tenley Hendricks’ 48, the Jets got off to a slow start, but the rest of the team had a better score on the back than on the front and it was Fruechte’s fifth score that made the difference.
Next week’s regional will be played at Noble Hawk with a hopeful 8:30 a.m. start on Friday.
