Win one and you’ll want another.
That was certainly true Tuesday night for the Bellmont boys soccer team. Less than a week after finally scoring the first goal of the season in a 6-0 win over Eastside, the goal of not going winless for the year quickly turned into picking up a second victory.
Both Eastside and Union City were new to the schedule for the season, but the Blazers had struggled so far and Bellmont were the much better team with the 6-0 win, which included a hat trick by Malachi LaVine.
Union City, on the other hand, came into Decatur with a perfect 8-0 record and plenty of goals to their credit.
The task to win a second game in a week seemed even more difficult when the Braves learned they’d be without senior Dieder Scheumann, a key part of the defense.
Grayson Riehm, Gavin Braun and the rest of the Braves’ defense stepped up, though, and kept a clean sheet in the first half.
The Braves, however, seemed stuck in their old ways when it came to finishing and they went into the halftime talk with plenty of possession, chances and shots, but no goals.
Then the Braves won a corner kick in the second half. Taken by Jack Barton, the curling kick was met by a perfectly-timed run by freshman classmate Isaac Pranger, who chested it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The home team then threw their weight and effort behind defending the 1-0 lead, but the task was a difficult one considering the team had just played in Fort Wayne the night before and defended their butts off in a 4-0 loss.
In the end, the Braves limited the Union City to two shots on goal the entire night and both were handled by Riehm.
Bellmont had 19 shots, but only needed the touch by Pranger to score the victory.
The Braves, playing with more confidence than ever this season, will host Jay County on Thursday night.
