A total of $11,600 has been raised in the first week and a half of a park board fundraiser to completely redo South Ward Park in Decatur.
Parks Superintendent Cara Gerber announced that total at the latest city council meeting.
A total of $50,000 needs to be raised in 60 days to match a $50,000 grant from the CreatINg Places program of the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA).
If the $50,000 is raised locally, the grant will be approved.
“Every dollar counts so please donate whatever you are able to so we can make this park a reality,” Gerber said in making the announcement.
Plans call for the park to become an inclusive and multi-sport area for youngsters and families “of all abilities.”

Business sponsorships are offered in sums of $250, $500, $1,000, $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000.
Plans call for an all-sports field that includes soccer and volleyball. A concrete basketball court already exists at the park on Winchester St.
The park will be fenced in.
WILL FIT: In a recent Facebook, the parks department said there have been some questions about whether the park will fit in the space at South Ward.
“This park may look smaller but actually will fit every item we have planned,” the department said.
An artist’s concept from the company providing the equipment shows each piece of equipment and the required spacing between each piece of equipment.
“This is 87 feet by 60 feet and will have a 5-foot sidewalk around it with a fence next to that sidewalk,” the department explained.
