The Bellmont Braves took another step toward repeating as NE8 champions Tuesday when they took out one of their biggest rivals, Norwell, in a 4-0 shutout, winning their second consecutive game against conference opponents.
After a 4-1 win at Columbia City last week, the Braves welcomed a team that did not feature Grace Mann for the first time in four years and they clamped down, barely allowing the Knights into the box.
The back line of Ashley Bleke, Maya Schlemmer, Kate Kitson and Ky Myers defended well enough that goalkeeper Mary Bleke was only called on once to make a save. Norwell had just 12 shots, with only the one on target.
Oni Krueckeberg got the scoring underway with an unassisted goal in the tenth minute.
Ashley Bleke made it 2-0 just two minutes later, with the assist coming from classmate Kaitlyn Barton. Those two juniors teamed up again on one of many Bellmont corners on the night and Bleke headed it home at 27′ for the 3-0 halftime score.
After the sides switched ends and before the second half hydration break, the Braves were awarded a penalty, which was calmly deposited in the back of the net by Krueckeberg for her seventh goal of the year.
Bellmont also took the JV game after a great performance in goal by freshman keeper Myla Schieferstein. Marleigh Salisbury and Fiona Schwartz both contributed the goals in the Braves’ 2-1 win.
