CEYLON – Londyn Smith was the medalist Wednesday for the South Adams Starfires at Wabash Valley, taking the individual honors by two strokes with an 82, while the Adams Central Jets collected a second team trophy in as many days with a two-shot victory over the Stars in the team race on a beautiful day for golf in Adams County.
While Smith was the low man in the 11-team field, it was the Jets, with three girls breaking 100, who went home with the trophy.
Smith’s play was excellent from the start. Starting on the third hole, Smith played her first nine holes at +4. Like she has done in the past, she made up for mistakes with shots that only a select number of players in the area can hit.
Londyn’s first double bogey came on the par-4 No. 14, but she immediately made up for it with a great birdie on No. 15 over the water. She ran into trouble with her worst hole of the day on No. 16, but finished her day par-par-par for the 82.
Adams Central was led by Tuesday’s medalist at Cross Creek, Tenley Hendricks, with a 90. Hendricks finished extremely well after running into some trouble on the Back Nine.
Lily Johnson played like a senior who knew her course, carding seven pars for a 92 and a top-six finish for the Jets.
Norwell’s Emma Burnau was second with an 84, turning in a scorecard that was all 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s, avoiding the big numbers.
Bellmont’s No. 1, Morgan Huss (pictured below), looked much better Wednesday, cutting 11 strokes from her score at Cross Creek Tuesday. She got off to an uncharacteristic poor start, but found her stroke on the ninth hole with a par on the short hole near the new bridge at Wabash Valley. Taking the shortcut to the red tees on No. 10 and skipping the bridge, Huss then went on a tear that included a birdie on 10 and a score of 41 on the Back Nine. She finished with a 95.
The Braves also got a birdie from Kinley Martin on the aforementioned No. 9. The senior was much better on the back, like Huss, shooting 47 on her way to an overall score of 104.
Ava Billman also had a nice improvement for Coach Macke’s team, taking seven strokes off her score from Tuesday to finish with a 105.
Adrienne Johnson and Grace Patterson each posted better scores Wednesday compared to Tuesday for the Jets, as well.
Aubrey Stoll’s birdie on No. 12 was the highlight of the day for the Heritage Patriots. Stoll went on to post a team-low 102. Freshman Grace Buuck made her debut for coach Minchski’s team, making a par on 12.
