DECATUR – The Bellmont Braves’ hopes of retaining the NE8 title evaporated Monday night, but the feel-good story of the season continued, as the No. 1 doubles team of Ella Ross and Averie Coats remained unbeaten with an exciting three-set victory.

With the Braves falling behind early as a team, the No. 1 doubles team forced a tiebreak in the opening set. They captured the set with a good service game, winning the tiebreak 7-3. However, they found themselves in the same position at the end of the second set (see gallery below with coach Vrablic) and the younger Viking team made amends, winning 7-2 to force a third set.

With the rest of the matches finished and Huntington North already enjoying a 3-1 lead, Coats and Ross kept their undefeated season alive with a convincing 6-2 victory in the third, picking up a couple of breaks of serve to avoid another tiebreaker.

Lillian Jin had the other victory for the Braves, winning in straight sets at No. 2 singles.

The Braves will play another conference match Tuesday when they host New Haven.
