A changed section of Seventh St. in Decatur has brought a request for some new traffic control from a group of residents.
Mary Montgomery, a resident of the area, presented to city council at its latest meeting a petition signed by 23 people who reside in the area of the intersection of Seventh and Madison streets.
Madison going west dead-ends at that intersection, then continues on the other side of railroad tracks on Eighth St.
The petitioners are asking for a three-way stop there. Presently, the only stop is for vehicles traveling west on Madison.

Montgomery pointed out how the area has changed over the years with the addition of the police station, the railroad depot being converted into a reception property, and traffic to and from nearby St. Joseph School.
She also noted the presence of a tree which limits visibility.
Petitioners feel “Seventh and Madison lacks adequate control,” Montgomery said.
The petition notes that lack of control makes it a “hazardous area for drivers and pedestrians alike. This is particularly concerning for families, including those with young children, those attending St. Joseph School and all residents as they navigate this intersection especially after Masses and school hours.”
Mayor Dan Rickord told Montgomery that the city would take the request under advisement and “will definitely take a look at it.”
Street/Sanitation Superintendent Matt Schultz will examine the intersection and Police Chef Kevin Gerber will also be asked for an opinion, the mayor said.
