The Adams County Sheriff’s Office recently announced a new initiative to enhance the living and working environment within the Adams County Detention Center through commissioned mural art and thoughtful use of color.
Inspired by a presentation on color psychology for correctional settings by Deanna Dwenger, PsyD, HSPP, at the National Sheriffs’ Association seminar, Sheriff Mawhorr invited local artists to design and paint large-scale murals in each housing pod. The first mural, completed by local artist Darlene Vassil, has been installed and received positive
feedback from staff and residents.

The Adams County Community Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant toward the first mural. Each subsequent mural is estimated to cost approximately $5,000 and requires roughly 55–60 hours of an artist’s work. Sheriff Mawhorr and the Sheriff’s Office will continue to pursue grants and local funding to expand the program to all housing pods.
The Sheriff’s Office welcomes community support. Members of the public who are interested in contributing to or learning more about the mural project are encouraged to contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is committed to serving and protecting the residents of Adams County while promoting a safe, humane, and rehabilitative detention environment.
