FLATROCK – Facing a six-game losing streak heading into the 3A sectional if they lost on Tuesday, coach Kyle Sovine’s Heritage Patriots put up 22 points in an exceptional fourth quarter to bust their losing streak and beat the DeKalb Barons, 63-52.

After starting the season 14-3 and winning a holiday trophy, while also reaching the championship game of the ACAC Tourney, the Patriots had fallen on hard times entering Senior Night against the Barons, who coincidentally were on the opposite trajectory, having won six of their last seven.

Fittingly, it was the seniors who did the hard work for the Patriots to set them up for a run, with Lantae Cassel leading the way with 24 points. Taurean Brown added twelve.
The Patriots led 18-11 after one quarter and 31-27 at half, but the Barons came roaring back in the third, taking advantage of four missed free throws by the home team and limiting the Patriots to just three made buckets.

The free throw woes were reversed, however, as Heritage saw out the game with 7 of 8 shooting in the fourth from the line. Cassel and Brown combined for 15 points in the Patriots’ 22-point fourth quarter.

The Patriots will enjoy an entire week of practice to prepare for a revenge game against Norwell in the 3A Bellmont sectional Tuesday. That game against the Knights can be heard on the WZBD YouTube channel.
Heritage Scoring: Cassel 24, Brown 12, Galentine 12, Sevier 7, Bowers 6, Taylor 2
