An American flag is once again flying atop the Adams County Courthouse.
For the first time in a number of years, a flag began gracing the courthouse in downtown Decatur late Monday afternoon.
“Everything is just perfect,” Adams County Councilman John Summers – who led the effort and saw it through to fruition – said Tuesday night.

Smith Erectors of Markle finished off the project, its huge, 175-ton crane placing the flag on the pole atop the courthouse.
Summers said some old parts were removed Monday and he took them to Universal Metalcraft in Decatur west of Decatur. The parts were repaired and within a couple of hours “I got them back to the guys with the crane.”
Soon, the flag was moving in the breeze high above the courthouse.

Fuhrman Electric of Decatur recently replaced a broken spotlight on the roof and installed a remote to raise, lower or bring the flag to half-staff.
“It has a dusk-to-dawn switch and it was working perfectly (tonight),” Summers said of the light.

Adams County government approved the use of $9,425.00 of ARPA (American Relief Plan Act) funds for the work by Fuhrman. Then, “I was installing the new flag and we realized the roller at the top of the flagpole was worn out,” Summers explained.

So the county and Decatur government split the $6,600 cost to get Smith Erectors involved.
