Calls for service to the Decatur Police Department showed a slight increase in May.
According to a police department report, calls last month totaled 1,646, a rise of 86 from the previous month.
In the first five months of 2025, the department has responded to a total of 5,782 calls for service, an average of 1,156 per month.
Categories that had some of the largest increases in May were calls involving juvenile complaints, traffic hazards, reckless driving complaints, traffic accidents, and traffic enforcement.
“For some odd reason, as the weather gets nicer we always see an increase with traffic related issues,” the report said. “Please drive with due regard for everyone else on the roadways, stay off your devices, use your turn signals, always double check at intersections, and drive the speed limit.”
The calls include a mix of emergency and non-emergency responses, including, but not limited to, traffic stops, traffic-related criminal offenses, vehicle accidents, and a variety of other traffic related concerns, the report said.
The number also includes property crimes, crimes against a person(s), and long-term investigations as well as non-criminal issues such as, VIN (vehicle inspection number) checks, civil disputes, animal complaints, vehicle unlocks, and neighbor complaints.
