The last vestiges of the gas station/convenience store that stood for years at the Five Points intersection in Decatur are being removed.
SCS Environmental Services has been at the site this week, removing underground tanks. The station, Sunoco in its final iteration, was demolished in December.

The Fort Wayne firm hopes to have the effort completed by the end of this week. Once the tanks are out, soil testing will be done, city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said.
If nothing hazardous is discovered in the soil in the immediate area, the task will be complete. Soil tested in the areas around the site of the station proved okay, Gilbert said.
The removal of the gas station and its tanks is a prelude to the installation of a roundabout – the first in Adams County – at Five Points later this year.

E&B Paving of Muncie won the contract for the project with a bid of $2,493,109. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is in charge of the project.
Federal funding will cover 80% of the total cost. Decatur’s 20% match will amount to $498,621.80, less than the amount the city budgeted for its share.
