The Heritage Patriots won their seventh match in the row by opening up the ACAC slate with a 3-1 win over Adams Central on WZBD’s featured match of the week, beating the Jets 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22.
In a matchup of Top 50 teams in the state, it was the freshmen from both teams that made the biggest impacts. The Patriots were led in kills by ninth graders Mallory Ehrman (20) and Kinley Galentine (17).
“It was a great night for our three freshmen hitters,” said head coach Shelly Schwartz. “The upperclassmen came up big in defense. It was definitely a good night to get off to a good start in the ACAC.”
The two teams were neck and neck throughout the opening set until the match was tied at 15. A service error by Adams Central gave Heritage the impetus for a run of four straight points and they never relinquished that lead.
The outstanding ACAC battle continued in the second set, where the teams found themselves tied at 17, 19 and 21 all before the Jets leveled things at one set apiece.
Ehrman, Galentine and the crazy defense of Kierstyn Hess gave the home team an advantage in the third set and they wrapped it up in a back-and-forth fourth to take the lead in the conference.
Elena Lybarger, another one of the talented Heritage freshmen, had eight kills. Hess led the Patriots with 27 digs. Grace Scheumann added 20 digs.
