Saturday night’s match between Bellmont and Delta will not only be a rematch of last year’s 2A state championship match, it will also be a night where the Bellmont program comes together with the Delta program to honor the legacy of the late Paul Gunsett.
Head coach Tim Myers released the following statement in regards to what is planned:
On the evening of Saturday, December 7, #2 (2A) Bellmont High School is set to host #1 (2A) Delta High School. This is sure to be another epic showdown in Decatur by the two perennial powerhouse wrestling programs. Although the duel will no doubt be a battle between these two historic rivals, the two programs will be teaming up to support a worthy cause within the wrestling world, in what is being dubbed “Paul Gunsett Night.” Paul Gunsett was a beloved teacher and coach for 29 years at Bellmont as well as a well-respected IHSAA State Champion wrestler. (1988 – 135 lbs.) He mentored many young wrestlers and students over the years before he lost his battle to cancer in 2023. “I will never forget walking into Team State in January 2023 shortly after we lost Paul. I was approached by Delta’s head coach, Cody LeCount with a card in his hand. That card was signed by all of Delta’s team members as a condolence for the loss of our great coach. I will never forget the gesture and it was a reminder of the great sport that we all love so much,” said Bellmont Head Coach, Tim Myers. On December 7, Bellmont HS Athletics will be waiving all gate fees, but a table will be set up asking all in attendance to consider making a generous donation from Bellmont and Delta fans alike. All proceeds will go directly towards a memorial for Paul Gunsett. Please understand that this is NOT a Bellmont Wrestling fundraiser; this is all about Paul Gunsett and the legacy he has left for so many young people. We are joining together with Delta, as a team effort, and asking everyone to forego their BHS/DHS apparel and wear black and/or gold in remembrance of Gunsett’s Purdue Wrestling days. Although our hearts are with our programs, we will be one team this evening in order to memorialize Paul and his contributions to wrestling. We will be collecting cash or check donations that evening. Please make checks payable to DWC. If preferred, Venmo will also be an option that evening for all and those unable to attend in person.
