The #7 South Adams Starfires will open their wrestling season Tuesday in a matchup of two Top 10 teams in 1A with Team State seeding up for grabs despite the early fixture.
The match will also be the debut for Sawyer Miller as head coach of the Starfires, who will feature their third head coach in three years when they visit the Blackhawks.
#10 Cowan graduated a great senior class this spring, but they still feature two-time medalist Jackson Bradley and his father, Casey, is now the head coach after filling the big shoes of retiring head coach Tony Abbott.
The Stars are likely to work their lineup around Bradley, but the bigger story will be how the two teams handle their forfeits. Coach Bradley is likely to have a forfeit at either 106 or 113 and he will be forced to forfeit two of the heavy weights to start the season.
On the flip side, the Starfires will pencil in an extremely tough lineup until they run out of names this year in the two heaviest weights.
The script is flipped from what it has been the last few years as it is South Adams with the automatic entry into this January’s Team State, with Cowan currently on the outside looking in. The Stars will want to get an early start on a good seed for this year’s bracket and their short trip to Monroe for the IHSWCA tourney.
Aside from seeing where Bradley falls in the Cowan lineup, one matchup to look out for will be at 175, where Wes Summersett figures to enter the Starfire lineup. He could face the only other big returnee for the Blackhawks in Noah Modglin, a regional qualifier last season.
The match will be the first even on both teams’ schedules in 2024-25.
