Playing at the site of some of their most memorable victories, the Bellmont Braves took on a formidable Norwell opponent Tuesday night to begin the second half of their NE8 slate. Coach Craig Krull’s team played extremely well in the opening two sets, then took on a tough Norwell challenge in the third, ultimately prevailing, 25-14, 25-10, 26-24.
Just one day after beating Adams Central, who were coming off a thrilling tournament victory over the weekend, in five sets, the Norwell Knights found the going much rougher against the Braves, who climbed into the top 20 over the weekend of the overall state rankings thanks to their rugged schedule.
Alyssa Gumbel led the way for the Braves with 16 kills, while MK Scheumann had 13. Scheumann led the team with 18 digs and three aces.
Bellmont climbed to 4-0 in the NE8, with matches against DeKalb, Huntington North and Columbia City remaining over the next ten days.
Entering the week ranked 17th overall by the Indiana Prep Volleyball Ratings, the Braves have played seven matches against the 16 teams in front of them and hold wins over two teams higher up in the rankings – Crown Point and Westfield.
The Braves will enter their sectional as the highest ranked team at South Side.
