The Bellmont Braves were focused on the Snider Panthers at Kreager Park on Wednesday, but there were plenty of eyes on phones across the pitch as parents and grandparents kept a watchful eye on a big NE8 showdown between Leo and DeKalb.
Having beaten Leo on Monday, the Braves were already in the driver’s seat with an unbeaten NE8 record, but Leo’s win now means that the likely worst-case scenario for coach Steve Lee’s team is a three-way split for the title if the Braves do not win out.
On the field, Emily Barton and the back line once again kept the opposing team off the score sheet. They’ve played over 320 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
The Braves won the non-conference affair, 2-0. They will make a longer trip Thursday when they play on the rock-hard pitch at Jay County High School.
Heritage also scored a win Wednesday, beating New Haven, 3-1. The Patriots have lost just one of their last four games.
