Fleming Excavating has begun work on making major repairs to an outfall along the St. Marys River in Decatur.
The broken outfall, caused by up to 10 feet of erosion on the river bank, has become a major source of concern for city officials.

The inoperable mechanism pumps overflow water into the river during a heavy rain.
Since the water can’t be moved into the river at this time because of the failed mechanism, the water from an unusually heavy rainfall could back up and rise rather quickly, city Infrastructure Manager Josh Zimmerman has said.
The outfall is located off First St., behind the now-closed, onetime Masters Plumbing/Heating building.
Fleming had the low quote among three bidders for the project, and after a few necessary additions, the cost of the work is pegged at $54,800.
The Decatur-based company has prepared a timeline for the work, with completion of the project set for September 16.
