Safety Park village in Decatur is in line for a much-needed coat of fresh asphalt on its streets.
Safety Park is located on the eastern side of the Worthman Field complex. The village sits in the northeast corner.
Fire Chief Jeff Sheets recently told Decatur City Council and its board of works that the streets are starting to show some serious wear. He said they haven’t had any maintenance in the over 30 years the facility has been located there.
He said was told by a knowledgeable person that waiting another two or three years to do something could result in a major project.
Sheets obtained two bids for repaving work: from Asphalt Authority and Asphalt Maintenance Service.
The board of works voted to go with Asphalt Maintenance bid of $5,059.
Council also gave its approval, with federal ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds to cover the bill.
Safety Park, which also includes the Survive Alive house for teaching fire safety, provides both pedestrian and fire safety to school-age children in Adams and Wells counties.
The village is the site of a huge Safe Trick or Treat event at Halloween time each year.
