The City of Decatur has announced that banners honoring local military veterans will soon be placed on light poles in the downtown area.
The project, first announced last September, is organized by the Antoine Rivarre chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
“We are excited to have these banners in Decatur and want to thank the group for organizing this,” the city said in its posting.
A total of 36 banners carrying the faces of men and women who have served or are serving in the military are going up on Monroe, First and Third streets in the downtown area.
City officials said earlier they would leave Second St. open to the events that happen each year, and special banners that have already been purchased for those areas.
The Rivarre chapter is handling all aspects of the banner project with no cost to the city – other than employees mounting and removing the banners – no paperwork nor liability.
The banners will stay in place until mid-November, then be turned over to the veterans on the displays.
