After seven near-perfect innings on the mound, Owen Wanner couldn’t get the South Adams Starfires in position to win Monday night against New Haven. He decided to use his legs and bat to do it in the eighth, instead.
Wanner struck out 13 and gave up just one hit in his seven innings of work, keeping the game at 1-1 from the second inning to the bottom of the eighth. He came to the plate in the bottom of the first extra inning and reached on an error by the third baseman, then stole second to get into scoring position.
Luke Bauman won the game with just the third hit of the night by the home team, knocking in Wanner from second on a base hit to center to win the game 2-1.
New Haven’s run in the first inning off Wanner came as a result of a leadoff walk and a fielding error by the infield. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed just the one hit.
Jax Wanner pitched the top of the eighth and gave up a hit, but kept the Bulldogs off the board.
The Stars are at home again Tuesday night against Heritage for a game set to be broadcast on WZBD.
