With an exciting 16-team field, this year’s edition of the Lafayette Jeff Willey Duals features two teams competing at 1A Team State and two more involved in the 2A Team State and the Adams Central Jets are one of the favorites to bring home the team title.
Coach Tony Currie’s team wrestled a memorable match before Christmas in front of a big crowd at Bellmont, narrowly missing a chance to knock off the top-ranked 2A Bellmont in a 38-32 loss. That result came without Keegan Bluhm and Zac Wurm in the BAGUBA lineup, but coach Currie expects both wrestlers to be back for the big two-day event.
The key matchups in this event for Adams Central will come on the second day, when the Jets will have a chance to solidify their claim for the top seed with a head-to-head matchup with Faith Christian, the last team to be voted in for the 1A field.
The Jets will also have a rematch with Maconaquah on the first day. The Braves were defeated by AC at New Haven on a match heard on WZBD earlier this month.
A potential championship match for the weekend will take place in the second round on Day Two when Adams Central squares off against New Prairie. The Cougars are one of 12 teams set to compete for the 2A Team State crown at Jay County on January 6th. The 144 pounder for New Prairie, Jeffrey Huyvaert, is one of the top wrestlers in the state at that class.
The toughest weight class of the tournament will be at 190, where Trevor Currie will have an opportunity to extend his undefeated senior season and break into the top 10 in the state if he can score some wins against guys like #5 Noah Weaver of Rossville and #19 Chad Washburn of Kokomo. Currie will also have a rematch against Austin Ringeisen of Maconaquah.
