Adams Central lost Zac Wurm to an injury early in Tuesday’s match at New Haven and the six points spotted to the Bulldogs was simply too much to overcome as the Jets suffered their first loss of the season 41-28.
Wurm was in a back-and-forth match with Charles McGrant at heavyweight after the Jets had taken a 6-0 lead with a fall from Wyatt McAfee at 215. Wurm had a lead earlier in the match but had to withdraw and default in overtime with a leg injury.
That started a string of wins by the home team, including a fall and a major from sisters Ysabelle and Julianna O’Campo at 106 and 113, respectively.
Dylan Ogg stopped the run for the Jets with nine points in the first period and it was all he needed to score a 9-6 victory over Timmy Rocha at 126. The Jets won the next two bouts and closed the lead to 20-18 for New Haven.
The Jets looked like they still had a chance to claim a victory in the meet despite the bad luck at heavyweight, but a 7-0 lead after the first period at 144 did not hold, and Lucas Barkley roared back to tie the bout at 8-8. Xander Schwartz re-took the lead at 9-8 with an escape, but Barkley scored a takedown and then a fall in the most impactful result of the night.
“Tonight we scored the first takedown in 11 matches,” noted head coach Tony Currie, “but we only won six of them. Our conditioning got us again. We just don’t have enough practices in.”
Currie noted that he hopes to have Keegan Bluhm back in the lineup for Thursday’s home opener against Columbia City, which should push Wyatt McAfee up to heavyweight until Wurm returns.
“We just need to get in shape and heal a couple of guys up,” said the coach.
The loss to New Haven came just 24 hours after the team was named the new #1 at 1A by IndianaMat after an outstanding weekend at the ACAC Duals.
“It is never as good as you think and never as bad as you think,” Currie preached. “Big high after Jay County and a big downer after tonight. We are probably somewhere in between when it comes down to it.”
The Jets still had a chance to win the dual meet when 165 came up. Matt Heiser had his man on his back and was scoring nearfall in the second period, but Luke Beckman came back to score the fall and win the match for the home team.
The Jets won the final two bouts to finish off the night.
Thursday’s match with Columbia City will be broadcast live on WZBD, 92.7 FM and so will the first two rounds of Saturday’s tournament at New Haven, where the Jets will wrestle Maconaquah and Avon.
