Some testiness broke out on a code enforcement matter at the latest meeting of the Decatur Board of Works and Safety.
And some less-than-civil treatment was encountered by a city official on another code enforcement issue.
Aaron Ellis (photo) and his mother, Vickie, attended the meeting as Brad Roe of the city’s building and zoning department went over a timeline concerning the department’s interactions with the Ellises over their properties at 221 S. 12th St., 225 S. 12th, and 316 S. 11th.
The properties were inspected by the department the morning of the meeting, and while some improvements had been made, some others had not, according to Roe.
Aaron Ellis then showed photos he had taken of some improvements he had made a few hours after the inspection.
They show “he’s come a long way,” Roe said.
However, when Roe asked to enter a building for an inspection, Aaron Ellis gave a quick “no.”
After some back-and-forth, Aaron Elllis mentioned something about a warrant, and said, “Next time I’ll have to bring my lawyer, real classy” before getting up and leaving.
Roe said he would make another inspection the next day.
Kylie Harvey, who lives with her husband, William, at an 804 Schirmeyer St. home owned by Gary Myers, also attended the board meeting.
Roe said “a nice job” was done on the property last year, but since then things were starting to deteriorate. Roe said when he last checked the property he received less than civil treatment from William, and more of the same in a phone call.
“I cannot apologize for my husband,” Kylie said in explaining that she has made some improvements on the property and is trying to do more, but she works a lot and has a very-sick mother.
Roe said he would be inspecting the property the next day. “I’ll keep my husband inside,” Kylie Harvey said.
