A six-spot in the bottom of the second inning was all the Starfires needed with Owen Wanner on the mound and they went on to win an important ACAC contest Wednesday night on a game heard live on WZBD, 10-0.Â
Wanner threw the first four innings and struck out nine batters, allowing just two hits and leaving the mound with his team up 7-0. The junior was also perfect at the plate, knocking in a run with a double and also singling and walking twice.Â
Visiting Jay County committed three errors and managed just four hits in total, picking up just two against Caleb Hirschfeld, who threw the final two innings in relief.
The big rally in the second started with singles at the bottom of the lineup from Corey Lenington and River Toledo. Coach Buckingham asked Gavin Myers to bunt and he also reached to load the bases with one out. It all fell apart from there for Jay as the next five batters reached with either a hit or a walk.
Catcher Luke Bauman was 2 for 4 on the night with four runs knocked in, while Matt Steiner was 3 for 3 at the bottom of the batting order.
The win pushed South Adams’ record back to a winning one at 8-7.
